A toothache is a pain that develops inside of or next to a tooth. Minor toothaches can result from a brief gum irritation that you can cure at home. Dental and oral problems that need a dentist's attention because they won't go away on their own generate more acute toothaches. The pulp in your tooth is a soft substance that has nerves, tissues, and blood vessels in it. One of your body's most delicate structures is the pulp nerves. When these nerves are irritated or bacterially contaminated, they are capable of creating agonizing pain (abscess). Temporary, DIY pain relief won't work if your toothache is getting worse. Contact a dental expert when it becomes clear that the problem in your mouth is becoming worse despite your best efforts. In the appointment, your dental professionals will review your medical background. Questions like, "Where does the pain come from?" may be put to you. When did it start, exactly? How awful is it? What makes the pain worse and what makes it go away? The dental staff will also perform a physical examination. You will have examinations of your mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, tongue, throat, sinuses, ears, nose, and neck. Your dentist may take X-rays of your mouth to assist determine the cause of your pain. How a dentist treats you will depend on what is causing your toothache. If a cavity is the cause of the discomfort, your dentist will either treat the cavity or extract the tooth, depending on the situation. A root canal may be required if the toothache is being brought on by an infection of the tooth's nerve (a technique to remove the infected pulp and replace it with sealing material). Bacteria that have made their way inside the tooth root's interior cause infection. An antibiotic may be suggested if there is a fever or swollen jaw. A popcorn husk or other small food item that becomes lodged under the gums can result in gum infection. In this case, a deep cleaning may be performed or suggested, followed, if necessary, by extra periodontal therapy (gum care).
