A toothache is a pain that occurs in or near a tooth. A short gum irritation that you can treat at home can cause minor toothaches. More severe toothaches are brought on by dental and oral issues that require a dentist's care because they won't go away on their own. Your tooth's pulp is a soft material that contains nerves, tissues, and blood vessels. The pulp nerves in your body are some of the most delicate. These nerves are capable of producing excruciating pain when they are inflamed or bacterially infected (abscess). If your toothache is becoming worse, temporary, homemade pain alleviation won't be sufficient. When it becomes apparent that the issue in your mouth is worsening despite your best efforts, contact a dental specialist. Your dental experts will review your medical history at the office. You may be questioned on topics like: Where does the pain come from? When did it first begin? How bad is it? What causes more pain and what relieves it? The dental team will conduct a physical examination as well. Your mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, tongue, throat, sinuses, ears, nose, and neck will all be examined. To help identify the source of your pain, your dentist may likely take X-rays of your mouth. The cause of your toothache will determine how a dentist will treat you. Your dentist will treat the cavity or extract the tooth, as appropriate, if a cavity is the source of the pain. If the toothache is being caused by an infection of the tooth's nerve, a root canal may be necessary (a technique to remove the infected pulp and replace it with sealing material). Infection is brought on by bacteria that have entered the interior of the tooth's root. If the jaw is swollen or there is a fever, an antibiotic may be recommended. A gum infection can be caused by a small food particle getting caught under the gums, such as a popcorn husk. In this situation, a deep cleaning may be carried out or advised, followed, if required, by additional periodontal (gum) therapy.
